IF YOU ARE DISCOVERING…

Avoid Filter Bubbles

How to discover new music and escape your filter bubble:

As we saw in the experiment, filter bubbles can make you feel that internet is giving you more of what you already know. At first, it feels like heaven. Only music that you like! However,  listening, again and again, the same music can also become boring and limiting for your creativity. This why we need to be aware of how those systems of recommendation work and most importantly; how to avoid them. (see below some tips)

During navigation:

-Use ad-blocking browser extensions. The most common one is Adblock Plus an extension compatible with the main browsers: Chrome, Opera and Android. Its principal objective is to block all the publicity coming up in pages like Facebook or in emerging windows. Add blocks are important to free your search and get re of the irritating suggestions on products, flights, services etc that come according to your history on navigation. Even though they have to be constantly re-developed, having them might be on of the essential things to do on the web.

-Use Incognito browsing, stayed logged out and delete search history. These elements will enable you to navigate without carrying data and shaping your search. Having your passwords recorded is probably easier than having to write them every time, however, you will have to choose which one is more important and to what extent.

-Avoid systematically the suggestions that belong to the mainstream songs. If filters could also offer sounds that you never heard it would be perfect because, in essence, filters are not useless stuff they also help us separate the music we prefer and discover more on that. So we just shouldn’t trust 100 % on filters or suggestions. This is why avoiding following mainstream songs suggestions could help us remain into a different path and discover diversity within your genre of interest. Here a tip is to create diverse playlists and follow only the suggestions based on your playlists because it is the most accurate suggestion based on your choices.

After navigation:

-Delete or block browser cookies. Once done with our activity

In general is highly advisable to get information from recognized sites and blogs that provide a wide range of perspectives. The same for music, this is why it was important to know how the system of recommendation worked in Spotify.

Now we will see how the playlists are offered and contrary to what could be thought. Spotify does not rely only on automated selection of music and playlist but also on curators that they hire through their webpage. So you can also become a curator!
